How to remove Mildew from Shower corners and Recaulk!
Posted by admin as How To's
We had a little mildew on our shower corners for the longest time. Our shower corners have the Caulk and the mildew was on top of the caulk…not very much but enough to get my attention and bug me. I tried a lot of bleach at first as recommended…a lot of the mildew would go away but it will come right back in a week or so. I tried other mildew sprays as well and it came back within a few days or a week. I even got an expert to come take a look at it and he said that it is probably because I do not have air flow in my shower and the moisture. For prevention, he suggested wiping it after each shower with a towel and leaving one of the windows open for ventilation. That idea sounded good for prevention but what about removing the ones I had and make them never come again. He had a very expensive solution which we were not interested in.
Finally, I got some good advice from a nice gentleman at Home Depot. I spent a lot of time there in Home Depot and this older gentleman explained to me how to get it fixed and it worked like a charm. Here is what I did to get it fixed….
- Remove the Caulk in the affected areas completely. For me, it was the corners of my shower. I removed it completely with a tool I bought at Home Depot….you can do it even with a philips screw driver.
- Wipe the entire shower dry.
- Put Bleach throughout the corners.
- Let it be overnight. Do not use the shower.
- Repeat the steps for atleast 3 to 4 days. We had 2 other showers we could use and it was worth the adjustment.
- After you are happy that all the mildew on the inside is removed, Re-caulk again.
- Every day, we have the last person to use this shower wipe the corners with a towel and leave the shower door open for ventilation.
Thats it! This fixed my Mildew problem and I am worry free for the last 9 months. It is amazing how if we use common sense to get rid of the problem, it works. One of the guys even suggested that the mildew must be inside the walls which is why it keeps coming back and suggested we redo the whole shower which would have costed us more than $3000. We got some quotes for that too.
